How to Support 2013 Black Friday Walmart Protests

If you would like to support Black Friday Walmart protests, here’s what you can do:

Why Supporting Wage Increases Is a Good Idea

Our economy is a consumer-driven market. When more people can afford to buy the things they need, it boosts the entire economy.

Still, some folks may secretly fear that Walmart prices might escalate if the employees are paid more, and stock holders may fear a small decrease to wild profits.

Maybe some research will calm such fears. Read the report that Demos published just last year, Retail’s Hidden Potential: How Raising Wages Would Benefit Workers, the Industry, and the Overall Economy.

If the report is too much to plow through, here is a summary by Robert Reich, Chancellor’s Professor of Public Policy at the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California at Berkeley. In it, he says:

If retail workers got a raise, would consumers have to pay higher prices to make up for it? A new study by the think tank Demos reports that raising the salary of all full-time workers at large retailers to $25,000 per year would lift more than 700,000 people out of poverty, at a cost of only a 1 percent price increase for customers.

And, in the end, retailers would benefit. According to the study, the cost of the wage increases to major retailers would be $20.8 billion — about one percent of the sector’s $2.17 trillion in total annual sales. But the study also estimates the increased purchasing power of lower-wage workers as a result of the pay raises would generate $4 billion to $5 billion in additional retail sales.

We’re In this Together

So very often, what is good for one, is good for all. And this is certainly true with the economy – because the economy is one big, giant system of which we all are a part.

Even corporate officers and stock holders will continue to benefit! But should they experience an ever-so-slight downturn in bonuses or returns due to increased wages… well, they could just chose to retire. Yes, they could retire and be the biggest winners of all. They could finally do something truly meaningful, like…

  • Write a book
