MI CATS Protesters Released on Probation

Michigan Coalition Against Tar Sands (MI CATS)

You may remember the horrible 2010 Enbridge tar sands spill in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The Michigan Coalition Against Tar Sands (MI CATS) was formed to halt all transportation and refining of tar sands in the State of Michigan. Last summer, three of their activists were sentenced to 2-3 years in jail.

The three activists, Lisa Leggio, Barbara Carter, and Vicci Hamlin were released from jail on Wednesday, March 5th. Their sentences were reduced to 13 months of probation and  $47,656.50 in restitution to the police (yikes!)

Since incarcerated, the MI CATS activists have added the prison-industrial complex to their protest issues.

2014 Peoples’ Choice Human Rights Award Nomination

Leggio, Carter, and Hamlin have been nominated for the 2014 Peoples’ Choice Human Rights Award. Go to the Human Rights Award website to give these heroic women a vote!
