Amy Schumer Responds to Call for Gun Violence Prevention Advocacy

Sarah Clements’ mother was a teacher who survived the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Afterwards, Clements became laser-focused on gun violence prevention. In an open letter to Amy Schumer, she urges the popular comedian and actress to join the cause. It was during a July 23 showing of Schumer’s new movie Trainwreck that the Lafayette, Lousiana theater shooting occured.

The Call to Amy Schumer:

“Your movie — which was so well-received, so brilliant, so you — will now forever have this shooting attached to it. You’ve been caught in the middle of our country’s terrifying, unending war with itself, our sick and twisted relationship with the gun lobby, which tells us we need guns for anyone, anywhere, anytime. Search your movie Trainwreck on Google and a scroll-down suggestion will now be ‘Trainwreck shooting.’

A showing of your film — an honest, unapologetic celebration of women’s rights to our bodies, decisions, and independence — was the place a middle-aged man who, ‘opposed women having a say in anything,’ chose to commit a mass shooting.” — Sarah Clements

Amy Schumer’s Response:

Don’t worry. She’s on it.

I love her and think she’s brilliant. I can’t imagine how that must hang over her head every day. I’m sure she will be helpful in a really great way.

I’m sure, too. I anticipate something thoughtful and on-target with gun regulation.
