If you have ever wanted to be an online troll, this Friday may present you with a worthy target: ISIS. Seriously, Anonymous is asking online users to help them shut down ISIS social media accounts.
Hacker collective Anonymous has declared December 11 an ISIS trolling day, saying it’ll be “a day they will never forget,” and it wants you to join in. The announcement was made via a Ghostbin posting, and is a continuation of the ongoing Anonymous operation against ISIS, which was heightened earlier this month following the terror attacks in Paris.
Here, Anonymous is asking for everyone’s help, but not for anything technical. Instead, it wants to troll ISIS. Hard. The trolling will take place in five different places, according to the post. Social media is the primary battleground, with Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube specifically mentioned. Additionally, Anonymous is organising demonstrations in real life all over the world. Behind the schoolyard pranks is a more serious activity. Anonymous says it wants people to seek out ISIS social media accounts, and report them. Removing ISIS accounts is a key tactic for Anonymous in its online efforts against ISIS. For its real world demonstrations, Anonymous has protest gatherings planned at different locations around the world. Why Anonymous Is Trolling ISIS
Here in Anonymous’ statement about why they are engaging in the December 11th online attack against ISIS:
“You may be wondering why we are “trolling” ISIS and planning all these demonstrations against ISIS. But to understand that you must first see how ISIS works. They thrive off of fear they hope that by their actions they can silence all of us and get us to just lay low and hide in fear. But what many forget and even they do is that there are many more people in the world against them than for them. And that is the goal of this mass uprising, on December 11th we will show them that we are not afraid, we will not just hide in our fear, we are the majority and with our strength in numbers we can make a real difference… And we hope to see you all brothers and sisters on December 11th. As we join together and show who we are, what we are and what we stand for. I will not see you on December 11th for I am not a person, but an idea of love and peace and we will show them that we will prevail after all their horrors for they do not have any control on us. Please show others and support us on the 11th….. It will be a day they never forget.”
