We Must Stand Indivisible to Resist Trump
Don’t like what’s happening in our country under the Trump Administration? You may want to join the Indivisible Movement, which takes its cue from the Tea Party’s infamously effective resistance to President Obama.
“We believe that protecting our values, our neighbors, and ourselves will require mounting a similar resistance to the Trump agenda — but a resistance built on the values of inclusion, tolerance, and fairness. Trump is not popular. He does not have a mandate. He does not have large congressional majorities. If a small minority in the Tea Party could stop President Obama, then we the majority can stop a petty tyrant named Trump.” ~ Indivisible
The key to successful resistance is coordinated grassroots effort. Stand indivisible, and act!
4 Tactics to Pressure Members of Congress
The best way to block Trump’s agenda is through Congress. By joining your local Indivisible group, you can put concerted pressure on Members of Congress to back away from Trump’s agenda.
Indivisible groups use four coordinated tactics to put grassroots pressure on Congress:
- Town Halls – Attend with repared questions for your group to ask
- Local Public Events – Your group shifts attention from the opposition’s event to your own message
- District Office Visits – Stage an impromptu town hall meeting by showing up with a small group
- Coordinated Calls – Group individuals coordinate their calls to a Member of Congress on a specific issue
Your local Indivisible group amplifies the impact of its resistance through social media and by developing contacts with local newspaper reporters. Take photos of your fellow sign-carrying resistors and share them with the various media.
Unity Is a Powerful Tactic
Unity is the most powerful tactic to check and balance a democratic government. While it is true that a few wealthy corporations and billionaire elites exert an inflated influence on Members of Congress, elected officials require the votes of millions of citizens in order to stay in office. Standing united is using the power we rightfully have.
The United States needs tremendous amounts of political, social, environmental, and economic change. No one person can make a difference, not even a Bernie Sanders (“Not me, us!”). But if everyone who is able, will play a small role in a coordinated effort to resist Trump, we can renew our democracy and make America beautiful again.
I love my country, and want to be proud of it. Don’t you? Then we don’t allow the unschooled, the incompetent, the childish, nor the morally bankrupt to call the shots. It’s time to stand indivisible, and take charge.
