The Growing International Populist Movement - Leaning Left, Politics
Written by JoAnn Chateau

Thom Hartmann talks with Prof. Richard D. Wolff about the growing international populist movement and the significance of democratizing the workplace…

“It’s not just Bernie Sanders — left-wing populists like the UK’s Jeremy Corbyn are on the rise all over the world. The media calls them radicals – but are they actually just old-school FDR progressives?” ~ The Big Picture RT

“They’re going to have to go further than the old Franklin Roosevelt if they’re going to be able to build a sustained change, because what Roosevelt tried to do was then undone afterwards….” ~ Richard D. Wolff

  • Wow! I learned a ton here – thanks for this link, JoAnn! My fear is that a new socialist system of worker co-ops will be repressed with violence.

    • Point taken. The U.S. worker co-ops I’ve heard of haven’t been repressed. But if they become a growing trend, I think Congress would first try to repress them by legislating “regulations.”

      • Those co-ops would be determined to control profits from businesses that owners have always viewed as their own. That’s hitting the owners where they live and they won’t take that sitting down. Yes, I agree, there would be government intervention on behalf of the owners unless there are enough socialist politicians elected to office. I can see that happening much more easily here in Canada where we already have a socialist party (NDP – New Democratic Party) operating at both the federal and provincial levels. Your strict 2-party system won’t accommodate a socialist party easily. It will be interesting!

  • I listen to Richard D. Wolfe on KPFA out here in Berkeley and am always so fascinated by what he shares. 30 years ago in my high school Government class I learned about Socialism and thought it was the most awesome thing I’d ever heard of! It took me a long time to figure it out but I am now proudly a Socialist!

    • I’m from the generation that feared socialism. Because of Bernie Sanders, I learned something about it. I discovered Richard D. Wolff. My eyes have been opened.
