A word of wisdom from Pearl S. Buck on society and elders…

Our society must make it right and possible
for old people not to fear the young or be deserted by them,
for the test of a civilization is
the way that it cares for its helpless members.
~ Pearl S. Buck

Old folks rock!

  • Heard similar from different people of note. How to care for our aged parents now that we boomers mid to late 60’s ourselves is a real challenge for millions. I don’t think I even know anyone who can afford $10 – $25 thousand dollars a month for nursing home and real elder care for advanced dementia is even more. The poorest families can get medicaid for the elderly parents but at a lower middle class income that is too much income too qualify and certainly not enough to provide care. My own parents moved in with me in 2002. I retired in 2006. I’m only child – all on me. Mother passed in 2012. Dad still with me . He gets around the house OK but can’t see to read or drive and I take care of just about everything.

Who’s Writing?

JoAnn Chateau

JoAnn likes progressive politics and loves the canines. She writes fiction about Chester, the Alpha Bichon -- with a dash of humor and a dab of Poli-Sci. Her views and insights are tinted by a former profession in Counseling, Christian theological studies, and training in Library and Information Science. Retired now, JoAnn enjoys the creative life.

Chester

Chester is a scruffy little Bichon dog, with a congenial Napoleon Complex, and stars in "The Chester Chronicles." He sometimes reports independent Canine News -- NO corporate treats accepted, NO corporate bias. Woof!

Graffiti Girl

Graffiti Girl (GG) is curator at JoAnnChateau.com. She's progressive to the core, and easily blown away by serendipity and/or good food. (OK, GG is really JoAnn.) GG's posts signal that news or content from another website is a "must-see" and "must-remember."
