Editor’s Note: Upon reviewing some old posts on my website, I have to say, “Look there!” I was writing about Bernie Sanders in 2013, two years before he announced his 2016 run for President. I guess I’m as consistent in my views (at least, on Bernie) as he is in his. ~ January 21, 2019.
Who is Senator Bernie Sanders?
Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders is an independent member of Congress, and a champion of progressive reform. Philosophically, he is a Democratic Socialist.
Does the word “socialist” scare you? That depends on how easy you scare. Sanders is interested in preventing big money from controlling U.S. politics. (Hmm, that sounds like preserving democracy.) He wants more balance between capitalism and the common good of the people.
Although Senator Sanders does not belong to a political party, he caucuses with the Democratic Party. His political priorities include:
- Restoration of the shrinking middle class
- Reversal of global warming
- Universal health care
- Affordable education
- Fair trade policies
Senator Sanders serves on five U.S. Senate committees:
- Health, Education, Labor and Pensions
Sanders currently chairs the Veterans’ Affairs Committee. When he was a member of the House of Representatives, Sanders was known as the Amendment King.
